Closed Recirculating System

The challenges faced in closed circuit systems are similar to those in open systems, including issues such as corrosion, scale, and microbiological contamination. However, the inherent differences between these systems necessitate different treatment approaches.

In closed systems, the fixed volume and low make-up water allow for the application of water treatment products at significantly higher concentrations than in open systems. This capability enables much more effective corrosion control in closed systems. Additionally, maintaining low dissolved oxygen levels in a closed system helps to further reduce corrosion rates.

Moreover, the use of higher biocide concentrations combined with extended contact times facilitates effective microbiological control in closed systems. While scaling is typically not a major concern unless there is substantial make-up water, it is still important to monitor and manage this aspect when necessary.

Microbiological Control ​

The primary troublesome microorganisms in closed circuit systems are bacteria, which can cause the swift formation of biofilms on pipework and heat exchanger surfaces. This biofilm buildup can result in reduced efficiency, restricted flow, and under-deposit corrosion.
