Dissolved oxygen in feedwater and process systems can lead to severe corrosion and pitting on metal surfaces, compromising equipment integrity. Oxygen scavengers are essential chemicals that react with and remove dissolved oxygen, preventing costly damage. Sodium bisulfite (SBS) and ammonium bisulfite (ABS) are the most widely used oxygen scavengers in oil and gas production, effectively reducing oxygen levels to safe thresholds. While ammonium bisulfite reacts faster, sodium bisulfite is often preferred due to its stability and lower risk of promoting bacterial growth.
For optimal efficiency, mechanical deaeration is combined with chemical scavengers such as sodium bisulfite to eliminate residual oxygen. The reaction is accelerated at higher temperatures and can be further enhanced with catalysts like cobalt. Key applications include seawater injection, hydro-testing, and acid stimulation, where oxygen control is critical for system longevity.
By integrating oxygen scavengers into your process, you safeguard infrastructure, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure operational reliability in demanding environments.
